Instituto Bernabeu highlights new ovarian stimulation strategies and use of the i-Port at the 6th edition of the Mediterranean Forum

  • 27-06-2018

Once again this year, Instituto Bernabeu was present at the 6th edition of the Mediterranean Forum, a national gathering organised by Merck under the title ‘Human Reproduction’ where gynaecologists learn about the latest in the field. The Director of the Reproduction and Genetics Guidance Unit at Instituto Bernabeu, Dr Andrea Bernabeu, was present at the event where exchanges on very latest in the field of reproductive medicine take place. Her presentation was on new forms of ovarian stimulation. The gynaecologist covered new approaches using personalised treatment, new protocols and new means of administering pharmaceutical drugs.

Dr Bernabeu presented two illuminating pieces of research work performed by Instituto Bernabeu and that will be presented at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) congress. The event is the sector’s most significant one in terms of the quantity of work presented. The research also has the added value of having been nominated for the best Oral Presentation and Best Poster at this significant international scientific gathering.

The oral presentation is led by Ll. Aparicio, Medical Co-Director of Instituto Bernabeu, and focuses on stimulation during the luteal phase in comparison with during the follicular phase. It concludes that two stimulations can be performed in in a single cycle in order to increase the potential and chances of obtaining oocytes. The poster is a study managed by gynaecologist Juan Carlos Castillo. It evaluates ovarian response and the retrieval of donor oocytes on different days of the cycle. Similar results were obtained at the beginning of follicular stimulation and this means that the patient can begin stimulation at certain times during the first part of the cycle in synchronisation with the receptor patient, improving the convenience of the process.

One of the things that caught people’s eye at the 6th Mediterranean Forum were the new means of administering pharmaceutical drugs. The Director of the Reproduction and Genetics Guidance Unit spoke about use of the i-Port at Instituto Bernabeu for ovarian stimulation. It reduces the quantity of injections from a dozen down to three. As well as the fact that it is easy to use, Dr Bernabeu also highlighted the fact that it is a means of getting around patients’ fear of needles.

Dr Bernabeu concluded that these new strategies meet the most important challenge: they are efficient and time-savers because the precise moment for stimulation can be chosen.
