Instituto Bernabeu researches whether or not oocyte retrieval and maturation can be linked to embryo aneuploidy and mosaicism rates

  • 13-12-2017

Instituto Bernabeu has presented research work entitled 'Is there a relationship between oocyte retrieval and maturation, and embryo aneuploidy and mosaicism rates?' at the 9th edition of the Congress of the Association for the Study of Reproduction Biology (ASEBIR). The research focuses on the relationship between the number of oocytes retrieved and matured following ovarian puncture and rates of embryo aneuploidy and mosaicism (chromosomal and cellular abnormalities).

Retrieving and maturing oocytes is a principle concern when a cycle of assisted reproduction begins. Use of the comprehensive chromosome screening (CCS) technique provides valuable information meaning that researchers can carry out an objective assessment of embryo condition and factors that may have an impact on results. The research concluded that when the number of oocytes retrieved in ovarian puncture and the number of mature oocytes when they are the woman's own ova increase, the embryo aneuploidy rate decreases.

The researchers have been able to use these results to verify that, to some degree, the efficiency of ovarian stimulation in oocyte retrieval impacts the chromosomally normal embryos obtained.

The research work was led by biologist Laura Cascales along with doctors José Antonio Ortiz, Jorge Ten, Adoración Rodríguez, Jaime Guerrero, Belén Lledó, Medical Coordinator Ll. Aparicio and Medical Director of Instituto Bernabeu, Rafael Bernabeu. It was presented in poster format at the congress held in Madrid in November 2017.
